The Australian street artist Smug, or Smug One aka Sam Bates has quietly painted an industrial scale mural on the wall of a house in the suburbs of Tasmania’s capital. The mural features a well known local identity, an artist and street character familiar to residents, retailers and cafe owners around the restaurant precinct of North Hobart.
Smug has lived in Glasgow for the last 12 years and was coaxed to Hobart by the house’s owner who had seen similar industrial size works overseas in London, Lisbon and the Mission District of San Francisco. His work is well known overseas and in Melbourne’s Fitzroy, Collingwood and on a four storey building on the corner of Spencer and Lonsdale in the cities CBD.
The Hobart Mural is a gift to the community by the owner and is supported by the Local Government and Arts Community.
